The Good
What's been the best ? OK - twist my arm. Too close to call between the Langhe Arneis and Cantina Miglianico's new 'Gocce' Pecorino.
The Bad
Time to name and shame. A dead-heat between a sloppily-produced, corked, bottle of Chianti Classico, resting on its DOCG laurels when it should be hanging its head in abject shame; and a pretty nasty Lambrusco. The €1 bottle of 'Maestri Cantinieri' - despite fear and foreboding - was actually OK !
The Bubbly
Not that there was immense competition from the Lambrusco, but the one Prosecco we've reviewed was very good. (Memo to self: Must try more…)
And What I've Bought Again !
The Langhe Arneis and Miglianico Pecorino (obviously) and the Miglianico Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and the Colle Secco Trebbiano d'Abruzzo (the Villasfor2 house red and white). The Grignolino d'Asti (sensational) and the Vermentino di Sarde
gna (ditto). I'd forgotten about the Frascati - which was terrific - and although Prosecco's a regular Sunday lunchtime treat, we're not attached to any particular brand.
Overall…
Plenty of really good white wines here - with a couple of standouts. Some decent reds too - but a couple of bottles no better than average and nothing exceptional so far inside our self-imposed €10 price ceiling. A good Barolo under €10 ? Still looking ! And I haven't reviewed enough Abruzzo wines either. No excuse for that really as it's our home region offering some terrific wines - the wines that of course you'll mainly be drinking on your Abruzzo vacation. An easily rectified omission !
Check on the pictures in the text for larger images - and if you like Italian wine, why not check out last week's 'Everyday Italian Wine' (a white from Le Marche that isn't Verdicchio) and bookmark this site for future weekly posts.
Next Week: It's time to highlight our home region again with a top-class wood-aged Montepulciano d'Abruzzo from one of the region's finest Cantinas. It's a wine you'll definitely enjoy trying at home - and on your Villasfor2 Abruzzo vacation !
